a day in my life

If you were ever curious about what my days consist of, this will not be a very good example.  I picked what I thought would be an average day to do this, not realizing that it wouldn’t be an “ordinary” day at all…

I get out of bed at 7:00.  To me, that’s early, and I need tea to wake up properly.


The dog is usually laying on my feet when I wake up:



After I quickly get ready, my ride to work is usually about 13 minutes, unless this happens:



And in Columbia, SC, that’s a common occurrance.  Especially near my house, which is close to a major train yard.  The worst is when they stop on the tracks — I always feel guilty when I’m late to work because of that.

I can’t really show pictures of what I do at work for confidentiality reasons, but I’m an LPC-I (a licensed counseling intern, which after 2 years will become a full LPC license) working at a clubhouse style day program that focuses on psychosocial rehabilitation for adults with serious mental illnesses.  It’s a hard job sometimes with the overwhelming amout of things to do (we’re currently understaffed) but it’s also rewarding in its own ways.

Most days when I get home it’s just me and the dog because my fiance works late, so I’m trying to spend that time productively by taking care of myself physically (I’m starting to jog) and mentally (using coping skills).  This is my corner of the living room:


I like to watch movies or TV shows or listen to audiobooks while I knit & crochet, or sometimes I’ll sit here and read or take a nap.

This day was special — in the evening Chris made homemade biscuits and whipped cream and we had strawberry shortcake with strawberries straight from a local farm that my mom gave us:



This was essentially my dinner, and we ate while catching up on one of our favorite TV shows:



A few rows of blanket knitting were accomplished, as well:



And the day continued to get more unusual… Roofers had been working on the back half of our roof the previou week — just some routine maintenance — but they dropped a pallet of shingles through the ceiling in our back room (where we keep the fridge, washer, dryer, 3 bookcases full of books, my sewing machine, a big wooden desk, & Zero’s kennel).  Strips of ceiling and insulation are hanging down a bit from the split the shingles made when they fell, and while I was knitting happily, Chris informed me that the storm outside was causing water to leak into that same back room.  He poked holes in the ceiling in a few places so that he could catch the water in buckets rather than it just rolling down the walls onto the floor, and we moved all of our books and bookcases into the dining rooom:



We’ve called the landlord multiple times about the leaking water but he didn’t pick up and hasn’t responded to our messages (he already knew about the hole in the ceiling and is sending someone in a few days, but we need it to be quick now with the water damage added on — it’s super humid back there and smells awful).  I’m getting pretty mad about it, to be honest.  In the meantime I’m just taking lots of extra allergy medicine so that hopefully the mildew and mold from the water damage won’t get to me too much.

So, that was a not-so-average day in my life! Hope it didn’t bore you to tears — I know I’m not that exciting but sometimes I really like it that way.  🙂

loopy doopy misery and fun

Being sick sucks.  Something came on all of a sudden yesterday and I had a fever during the night.  Now I’m just stuck with a runny nose and clogged sinuses, which usually leads to chronic ear infections.  I’m on a decent number of medications and am feeling a bit loopy.  Kinda like “WHEEE!” and “UGH!” at the same time.

On the bright side, I think I’m going to love my job!  We get free lunches every day, flexible schedules, insurance benefits, paid vacation time and sick days, and my coworkers are great, not to mention the interesting times with clients!  I don’t often do selfies but here’s me at my desk!

first week of workThe lime colored Patagonia vest was from the thrift store that our program operates, but it’s closing so one of my coworkers snagged this for me!  They’re already accepting me and it feels so nice to be liked!  🙂

So do you have things that you specifically like about your job, or are you working in a place that makes you unhappy?   And how many of you are stay-at-home moms or “housewives?”  I’m just curious because it seems to me that ladies who are all about family consumer sciences (that’s what they call home-ec these days) or being at home are the ones who knit and crochet the most (although I have seen a couple of business women knitting in public over the years).

Speaking of knitting in public, I saw a lady knitting in the waiting room of the allergist’s office yesterday.  I kept trying to watch her because I was curious, but I think she noticed and thought I was staring at her in a way that connotates that knitting is stupid (which, as we all know, is not the truth).  Do you feel like people look at you in a snobbish way when you knit/crochet in front of others?

a hat and my new job

I started my new job this week, and it’s going very well!  Thank you all for your encouragement and kind words last week when I was so nervous.  I’m still a little nervous because there are still so many things to learn, but the people I work with are great and I’ve enjoyed my days there so far.

My needles have been busy but I can’t share everything yet — I’ve finished some Christmas presents but the intended recipients might just visit my blog here!  My dad probably won’t, though, so I’ll chance showing you his Christmas present:

gsb2It’s a very stretchy hat knit on US size 10 needles with chunky yarn (I used Berroco VIntage Chunky).  The pattern is called Giftie Slouchie Beanie and it is free.


It looks good on men and women, and I’m in the process of making a green one as well (but I’m not sure who that’ll go to).

My Mom’s Christmas present is finished but I can’t share it yet because she might see it here.  I’ve also started a project that’s sort of a secret — it involves a big yarn review at the end!  So basically I have a few WIPs, none of which are the Christmas ornaments I told myself I’d make to give as gifts…

need some advice & life update

Hello everyone!  Do you know anything about double knitting?  I’ve never made anything by double knitting before, so I don’t know how to do the cast on edge properly or the decreases on the inside layer of, say, a hat.  Any recommendations?  I believe there are probably many ways to do it, but what do you think is best?

I thought about just knitting a regular top-down hat and then switching colors at the end, going on to create a mirrored bottom-up hat that’s attatched tot he first, making a bullet shape.  Then I could just flip one of them inside the other and get the same effect!  That seems like taking the easy way out, though, and I want to at least know how to do it properly before choosing how I want to do it.

In other news, I finally got a job!  Yippee!  A real, full time job in the counseling field)!  It’s at a nonprofit place nearby that predominantly does psychosocial rehabilitation, I believe, serving a majority of bipolar and schizophrenic clients that have been referred for this specific kind of help.

I’m not sure what I’ll be doing precisely, so I’m incredibly nervous.  Something was mentioned about a caseload of about 15 a week and groups of up to 50 people.  I think I’m going to freeze up from nerves, I really do (because I myself have social anxiety which often makes coherent speech in front of strangers nigh impossible, turns my face into a beet, and makes me forget what I’m doing).  Mom says, however, that there will surely be a short training period so that I can get settled in.  I think I am going to go through some of my more relevant textbooks from grad school and refresh my knowledge and skills base, just in case.  I swear, I’m more nervous now than I was when I was waiting to hear yes or no!  I start on the 18th so the next week and a half will be nerve wracking, I’m sure.  Time to pull out some distracting activities (or as we say in the counseling field, coping skills)!

my temp job on a food truck

A few posts ago I mentioned that I’ve started working on an as-needed basis on a food truck called The Herban Legend, and I wanted to share a bit about it with you.  It’s so fun, and I wish I could just keep doing that for a while (but I need a job that will have more hours and thus, more money).  I’m actually really proud of the business, the chef I work with (my chef boyfriend’s head chef’s girlfriend… so many chefs!), and myself — I’m learning quickly and doing my best!  Here are some pictures:

You order at the window, and inside there’s a fryer, a flat top grill, some warmers, a refrigerator for the fresh ingredients, a freezer, a cooler for the drinks, a sink, and the little area in front of the window that has a table/cutting board.  That’s a lot in such a small space!  I stand at the window and take orders using both regular paper tickets and an iPad app that’s like a cash register.  The chef’s phone has an attachment that works with the same register app, and it lets you swipe credit/debit cards.  Pretty cool, right?  I also season the fries, put things in the little baskets and paper bags, and call out the names of the customers to give them their orders.  I’m learning what goes into each dish, so maybe I’ll be able to construct them myself sometimes when we get really busy!

The menu is designed with a few staple items and some specials that can change from day to day, depending on what ingredients are available and what new ideas the chefs have.  Here’s what we were serving on Wednesday:

I’ve tried almost everything and it’s all amazing!  The Parmesan truffle fries are especially great — they’re tossed with Parmesan, truffle oil, and a salt blend:

There are always some left over at the end of the day, so I get to eat them along with a free meal of my choice!  It’s really a great job, I just wish I could work more days/hours!

Just wanted to share this with you.  I know it’s not crochet/knitting related but it’s something I’m really excited about, and I don’t go off-topic too often, right? 🙂
