There are varying ways to make the star stitch, many of which are confusing and leave messy edges, or that don’t even finish the star.  This is the best way I know how, and if my instructions don’t make sense, check out these videos I found on YouTube that uses the same method:

what you can do with it:

There is a definite wrong and right side to this fabric.  The back is not pretty at all, so you might want to use this stitch for things where you won’t see the back, like a pillow cover or a bag, etc.  Many people change colors every 2 rows so that each row of stars is different (the stars are made in two rows).

how to do it:

Chain a multiple of 2, plus 3 (i.e. 23)

Stitch 1: insert hook in second ch from hook, pull a loop through; insert hook in next ch from hook, pull a loop through; do this until there are 6 loops on your hook, yoh and pull through all 6 loops (this makes the “spokes” of the star); ch1 to finish stitch and make the “eye” of the star

Following stitches in row 1: insert hook in “eye” you just made, pull a loop through; insert hook in last “spoke” of previous star, pull a loop through, insert hook in same foundation ch that the last “spoke” of previous star is in, pull loop through; pull loops through next 2 ch (you should have 6 loops on your hook now); yoh and pull through all 6 loops; ch 1 to finish stitch and make the “eye” of the star.  Continue to end, and hdc in last ch.

Row 2: ch2, counts as a hdc; make 2 hdc in each “eye” of previous row across, then hdc in last st (you’ll have an even number of hdcs on this row, counting the beginning ch2)

Row 3: ch3, insert hook in second ch from hook and draw up a loop, draw a loop up from next ch, draw a loop up from first, second, and third stitches (so you have 6 loops total on your hook); yoh and draw through all 6 loops, ch1 to finish stitch and make the “eye” of the star.  Continue making star stitches as you did in row 1.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you’re finished, then tie off regularly and weave in ends.  I really hope this made sense to everybody.
