example of the crochet shell stitch

This beautiful stitch can be done in a solid color or, for more distinction, you could make each row different.

how to do it:

Start off with chains in a multiple of 6, plus 1 for the turning chain (i.e. 25 would work for a scarf using worsted yarn).

Row 1: make a sc in the second ch from hook, sc across, ch3 and turn (counts as first dc of next row)

Row 2: make 2 more dcs in first st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 st, *work 5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, rep from * until you have 3 sts left, then dc 3 in last st, ch1 and turn.

Row 3: sc in first st, dc 5 in sc of previous row, sc in third dc of the shell of previous row, repeat until end, with a sc as your last st, ch3 and turn.

Row 4: dc2 in same st, repeat pattern of row 3 until you have 3 sts left, then dc 3 in last st, ch 1 and turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until your piece is as long as you want.  You may want to add an extra row of sc at the end for a finished look.  Enjoy!
