bought lots of yarn…

KnitPicks had (and may still have) a promo code that gave you a free ball of Chroma with a $25 purchase, so I took advantage of that (I’ve never tried Chroma, have you?).  I bought yarn to crochet the Coming Up Roses Hat, and whatever’s left I’ll use to knit a Totoro Hat.  Dunno what I’ll do with the Chroma yet; depends on how soft it is, etc.  Here are the colors of Comfy Worsted and Comfy Worsted Heather Special Reserve that I purchased:

imageimageI got more than I needed but I wanted to play with the colors in person before choosing the pinks in particular.  This is the Chroma colorway I got for free (called Sugar Cookie):

That’s all I’ve got for today.  I haven’t done much for the past few days (as far as yarncrafts go) but I’ve got an idea for a future crochet blanket that I already have yarn for and a few other things, as well!  I’m gonna have so many WIPs…  How many do you usually have?

Thanks for stopping by, see you soon!

5 yarn shops to visit on Etsy (& 9 I want to try!)

5 yarn shops to visit on etsy

Shops you should visit:

Supernatural Yarns

I purchased book/movie themed yarn from this store called “Effie – Nymph Sock” and it was great — no knots, soft, lovely colors.

Welthase

I purchased multiple yarns from this store, the “lace merinosilk,” the “lace supersilk,” and the “BFL sporty DK,” all of which are lovely.  The silk in particular is super-soft, and the dyes for all of them are beautiful.  No knots.

Dye For Yarn & Dye For Wool

This is kind of two for one, but these shops are run by the same lovely ladies (who provide excellent customer service, by the way — like for realsies, they are SO nice).  I’ve used their “merino/babycamel” fingering weight yarn and it is SO soft, SO gorgeous, and I liked it so much I’ve used it in a giveaway (and there’s more where that came from — stay tuned for more of that this year!).  Oh and no knots!

Ruth Plus Two

From this fellow blogger I have purchased some cute stitch markers, but I’d love to try the yarn too!

Brazen Stitchery

This shop has moved to it’s own domain but you can find it through the remaining Etsy shop.  I purchased another book/movie themed yarn from them, their “District 12” sock yarn, and it was soft, warm, and nice to use.  And no knots.

Shops I want to try:

KnitCircus Yarns

I really want to try their gradient yarns, they’re really pretty!

Two Black Sheep Yarn

Again, gorgeous gradients.  I want them all.

Ozifarmer’s Market

Not only do they have gorgeous gradients, but I’ve heard the yarn quality is really nice too!

Wollelfe

Beautiful, giant gradients!

V Yarn

Geeky themed colorways, including Princess Bride, Lord of the Rings, Downton Abbey, Sherlock, and many more!

Kettle Yarn Co.

These just look like gorgeous colors.  Love!

We Will Tell You All of Our Secrets

The colorways are pretty, and the maker designs great patterns too!

crocheTime

Run by another fellow blogger, this store has some brands I’ve been itching to try!

Natali Sterwart Hand Dyed Yarn, Fiber, & Textiles

Lovely dark gradients and colorways.

So have you tried any of these stores before?  I’d love to know if you’ve tried any yarns from any of the stores listed, particularly the ones I’m wanting to try!  Are they good?

Thanks for stopping by, see you soon!

new yarn!

I’ve tried a new Etsy store!  Here are the yarns I purchased:

welthase yarn

Welthase yarn is dyed in Germany and it’s lovely!  I balled it up using my ball winder (well, Chris wound it, I used my knees and arms to act as a swift) and there were no knots in any of the hanks (NO KNOTS!!!).  I got 600m of the lace merinosilk in coral,  800m in lace supersilk in silver, and 262m of BFL sporty DK in shimmering grey.  The yarn is very soft, particularly the supersilk!

I have plans for each of these — a knit project and a crochet project — and I’ll have leftovers of some of them.  I’ll update later on how they are while working on a project.  I can’t wait to get started!

That’s all for now, thanks for stopping by!

top 4 yarns of winter ’14/’15

top 4 yarns of winter

There are a few wooly faves for this past season, and since the last day of winter is in 2 days I thought it’d be a good time to share what I very happily used.  In no particular order, my top 4 are as follows:

KnitPicks Hawthorne Fingering in Ladds Addition colorway:

Gentille cowl - lacy chevron sectionThis yarn is absolutely gorgeous (both the colors themselves and the way it made a pretty zigzag pattern in my Gentille cowl).  Soft to work with and wear next to the skin.  It is a fingering weight/4 ply yarn made up of 80% wool, 20% nylon and comes in skeins of 357 yds/100 g.  Pick it up from KnitPicks for a really good price.

DyeForYarn Fingering Merino/Babycamel in Dyeing Rose colorway:

Closeup of Phoenicia shawl/wrap on NotYourAverageCrochet.comThis super-soft fingering single ply yarn is made of 55% merino, 45% camel and comes in skeins of 525 yds/100 g.  I’d say it’s really more of a light fingering.  Very strong for a single ply yarn!  It made a great Phoenicia crescent shawl (and a Plume beanie from last year), and while this colorway is no longer available you can pick up a gorgeous array of colorways at the DyeForWool Etsy shop.

Berroco Vintage in 5176 colorway (a heathery autumn orange):

Gothic Lace Cowl

The Gothic Lace Cowl I made was pretty quick to work up using this  worsted weight 10 ply yarn.  Made up of 50% acrylic, 40% wool, and 10% nylon, it is soft enough to wear against the skin and can be washed in a machine (if you want to slightly felt your work it will do so if you use hot water and put it in the dryer, too — this is an advantage when you make blankets that dog claws might snag and you want to avoid that problem).  It comes in skeins of 217 yds/100 g.  This was purchased at a yarn store in North Carolina.

Malabrigo Yarn Arroyo in Coffee Toffee colorway:

nara mitts

These Nara mitts were made in 2013 but I’ve made something with the leftovers this winter that will be posted next week.  Made of 100% merino, this sport weight 5 ply yarn is very soft and comes in skeins of 335 yds/100 g.  The Coffee Toffee colorway is hard to capture properly in photos — it’s a purplish brown with a hand dyed look and is very beautiful!  I purchased this also at a yarn shop in North Carolina.

So that’s it, my top 4 yarns of this winter!  I’d recommend them all.  All beautiful, all soft, all fun to work with!  Thanks so much for stopping by, see you soon!
