oh dear…

It’s amazing how much crafting one can get done when there is something massively important looming closer and closer that you don’t want to prepare for.  Like studying for my school exit exam.  Look what I made today:

flower cushion front

It’s the front for the blooming flower cushion from Attic24.  I know, I know, I copy her stuff a lot.  Well, I had the leftover Stylecraft Special DK yarn from my last blanket, and it’s a cute fun pattern, so why not?  It’s been in my Ravelry queue forever, and I was reminded of the pattern by Rachel’s recent post on her own lovely finished cushion.

I’m dissatisfied with the picture — it looks so dark — but our apartment windows let in minimal light and it’s nighttime anyway.  I was just too excited with this project to wait until tomorrow.  Plus, tomorrow, I may have the back done and the whole thing sewn together to show you.  We’ll have to see… I REALLY need to study more.  I also need to find something to fill the cushion with.  Our Hobby Lobby doesn’t have round pillow forms and my LYS doesn’t carry them either.  Maybe old T-shirts, if the T-shirt colors don’t show through the yarn.  Or maybe a square pillow just stuffed in.

Also, does anybody have any ideas about how I could easily make this cushion cover removable?  The pattern instructs for it to be completely stitched up around the pillow form, and that might not be best since I have a boyfriend and a dog (meaning I have to wash things a lot).  Adding buttons unobtrusively might be difficult though, I just don’t know.  Or instead, do you just throw your cushions and covers alike into the washer?  If I could throw it into the washer whole, it wouldn’t matter.  What do you think?

2012: a pictorial overview

Can’t say hello to 2013 without saying goodbye to 2012!

I’m back!

I’m back from my trip to Ireland and England, and boy did I have some catching up to do in the blogging world!  I’ve been reading for at least an hour, but now it’s time to write, because I have so much to share with you!

First, I met Rachel from The Little Room of Rachell while I was on my trip!  It was my first time meeting a fellow blogger, and it was hers, too.  We met up in Oxford and spent a lovely afternoon strolling around and chatting (about lots of stuff, not just blogging and crochet) and eating and drinking.  We visited some yarn/craft shops, but not everything was open due to the holidays.  I’m still exceedingly jealous that there are so many little yarn shops in England!  At least, there are compared to South Carolina, where there is only one that I can semi-easily get to.  We saw some of the tourist-y attractions as well, and I kept saying how sort of mind boggling it is to visit places that are older than my country.  The places we stopped at for foodstuffs were very tasty and they felt very authentic — I believe Rachel told me that one of the pubs had been on the same site since the 1400s and I was in total awe.  It was so much fun and it was so lovely to meet Rachel, and I hope I can meet her again some time!  Oh and she gave me a little gift she made herself (thank you Rachel!):

isn’t this little crochet stocking the cutest thing?

While I was in Oxford, I had to stop at the Cath Kidston store.  We don’t have them in the US, and the shipping costs are ridiculous, so I tried to stock up on some cute little items that would fit in my suitcase.  I got some melamine storage bowls, a nice face mitt, and a couple of other picture-worthy items:

Can I share some other pictures from my trip with you?

And guess what my grandma got me for Christmas?  Two new crochet books:

These are going to teach me so much!

And my parents got me, among some lovely other things, this magazine which I thought might interest you:

Not only does it have 31 knitting projects inspired by Jane Austen’s books — it also has some really interesting articles about materials and clothes during her lifetime.  Here are the titles of the articles:

It was so interesting I read it all in one sitting!

OK, I think that’s all for now.  Unfortunately, even though I took my needles and hooks and some yarn with me on the trip, I didn’t do a thing — I was too tired to pick anything up.  I’ve got nothing new to show at this time, but I’m sure I’ll get back to business soon.  Also, I may do a “review of 2012” post, like so many others are doing.  It’s a nice way to remember all the good crafty moments, don’t you think?

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you drop in again soon!

third time, really?

Yep, I started the mitts over, again.  This time, due to the discovery of lovely mitts with no thumb-holes at all over on Häkelmonster.  They looked so toasty, I just had to make some, too:

newmitt

Yes, it’s basically just a tube, but it’s a toasty tube!  I just whipped up some ribbed rows on size 6 needles and switched to seed stitch on size 7 needles.  This is my first time using the seed stitch, and I’m really pleased.  I wanted a texture that would be very warm, elastic, and easy, and this fit all three.  And if I want to use my fingers, I just roll the top down:

I love it!  I’m thinking about adding some sort of crocheted lacy border on the top edge of the mitt in a cream colored bamboo thread, just for looks.  What do you think?  Would the edging restrict the elasticity?

I’ve also been crocheting.  I’ve got quite a few baby hats to donate now:

I’ve got tons more yarn, but I may take these to the hospital for donation before I leave on my trip on the 18th.  I’m doing most Christmas present exchanges before we leave, as well, so I only have 9 more days to get everybody’s presents!  I still don’t have anything small for my wonderful parents, who are taking me on this trip to England.  I’ve got lots of big things to give them before we leave, but nothing that will fit in my suitcase so that they can open something on Christmas day.  I just keep seeing big or heavy things that they would love!

That’s all I’ve got for today.  Thanks for stopping by!

leftovers

Not only am I full of leftover Thanksgiving food, I’ve also been using my leftover yarn:

I’m crocheting baby hats out of the leftover Stylecraft Special DK to donate to the hospital for the newborns.  I’ve got quite a few shades of blues and pinks, but that’s just what I’ve got so far.

Dad reminded me today that we leave for Dublin in exactly 3 weeks, so I started knitting some fingerless gloves.  I’ll post pics when I get done with one of them.  I’m not sure that I will finish the Weasley Sweater I’ve been working on in time for the trip since I’ve only just started the back of the sweater, but we’ll see.

That’s all I’ve got for today, thanks for stopping by!
