it’s time: CAL, BEGIN!

Alright everyone, grab your hook and yarn — it’s finally starting time! Let’s dive right into our “As-we-go stripey blanket” crochet along! We’ll be doing our foundation chain and 5 easier rows this week, and I’ve got pictures for step-by-step demonstration.  And don’t forget, I’m using US crochet terms! Here’s a handy chart:

crochet terms conversion chart

foundation chain

Begin by chaining any multiple of 24 (i.e. 96, 120, 144, etc., and don’t chain too tightly!). Then chain 2 more for our turning chains. With my DK weight yarn and my H/8/5mm, I chained 194 total to make my throw about 50″/127cm wide, but you make yours however long you want to! As long as it’s a multiple of 24 plus 2 you’re fine! Double, no, TRIPLE check you have the right number so you don’t have to start over later!  Edit: I should also say that because the 2 turning chains count as your first hdc, you should have an odd number of stitches for every row in your blanket (you will have a multiple of 24 + 1 stitches).  So for example, since I chained 192 + the 2 turning chains that count as 1 stitch, I will have 193 stitches in all of my rows.

row 1

In the 3rd chain from your hook, make 1 hdc:

cal1

Make hdcs all the way across, but don’t pull the final loop through the last stitch! Stop at this point:

cal2

To finish the row, pull your next color through to finish the stitch. This is how we will finish every row where we change colors:

cal3

Ch 3 and turn.

row 2

The turning chains count as your first stitch of the row (and will for all rows to come unless otherwise specified). dc in each stitch across. You can work over your tails for rows like this so that you don’t have to sew them in later:

cal4

I like to crochet over the tail for at least 5 inches before snipping the end of it. At the end of this row, pull your next color through, ch 3, and turn.

row 3

Make 1 dc in the 1st stitch:

cal7

Skip 2 sts, work 3 dc in next st:

cal8

Continue this until the end, making only 2 dc sts in the last st of the row. Pull next color through, ch3, turn.

row 4

Make 3 dc in space between the 3 dc clusters in the row below:

cal10

Repeat this pattern until the end. Make 1 dc in the top of the turning chains of the row below:

cal11

Change colors. I’m using the same one as row 3. Ch 3, turn.

row 5

Repeat row 3! Then:

cal15

Don’t leave your ends unwoven til the very end, or you’ll never want to do them!

So this is all for this week:

cal14

This took me about an hour and 30 minutes (including weaving the ends), so hopefully a wider blanket won’t increase the time by too much.

I hope you enjoy! Please feel free to post any pictures to the Ravelry group page or the new facebook page — I’d love to see!

Thanks so much for participating — I’m really excited and I can’t wait to continue making our lovely blankets grow!

Edit: on Instagram use the tag #nyaccal and we can all see your progress!

    • I’m glad you think it’s understandable! I debated long and hard over which of the zillion pictures I took should be used, haha. I plan to keep up the specific instructions at least until everyone’s had time to get used to the stitches and/or can refer back to previous rows. Thanks so much for the feedback! 🙂

  11. Hello, Hannah! This is my first CAL, too. I’m using fine yarn, hook nº3 and 120 stitchs. The colors are just 5: two shades of green, white, orange, sand and chocolate. My first row is ready! Hugs to all, from São Paulo, Brasil!! PS: Sorry about my English, I’m using Google Tradutor.

  12. The tutorial is perfect, my first 5 rows are done!
I am using sock yarn, together with my E/4/3.5, and chaining 168 stitches equals 39″/100 cm. The stripe generator we already talked about arranges the four colors (red, pink, turquois, and blue) I ended up choosing and I am very pleased with the outcome. Picture to follow on either ravelry or facebook.
Looks like I am not the only one to finish this week’s “homework” early – so if ever you decide to speed up a little: I would not mind! 🙂

    • That’s great! Very fast and well done! Some others finished quickly too so we may have a couple more rows next week.

      • That would be great (if it’s not too much work for you)!! With 6 rows / week (= 4,5cm) it’ll take me 32 weeks to finish my (small!) blanket and it won’t be different with everyone else. So maybe we really have to gain momentum?
Can’t wait for this week’s rows – due tomorrow, right? Thanks again for starting this. I love the idea of “Hannah Davis blankets” worldwide 🙂

I have a question. I purchased my yarn a while ago and just realized I only have 9 different colors. I am going to my stash to try to find more. Do I need to have 11 different colors and do I reshuffle the colors after the first go through? I am enjoying making 3 baby blankets for each of my 3 children and my future grandchildren (hopefully). Thank you!!!!

    Like

    • You can have as many colors as you want! You don’t have to put them in any particular order, although I’m going to try to use colors that I have less of for smaller rows and colors I have more of for the bigger rows so that I will have enough of all the colors. I’m glad you’re enjoying it and I can’t wait to see your finished blankets!

  19. How do I get the program? the pattern, and the yarn?

I deleted your post accidentally and am ready to start in.

    Like

    • I’m glad you’re joining in! 🙂 I’m just making up the pattern as we go, so it’s not complete yet. All of the weekly posts are here, in the CAL category: https://notyouraveragecrochet.com/category/cal/ The first posts are at the bottom and the most recent at the top, and I post the pattern for the next few rows every Saturday at 00:01 EST (and they will appear at the top of that page). You can use any kind of yarn in any number of colors you would like. I’m using Stylecraft Special DK yarn in 10 shades with an H/8/5.00mm hook, but you don’t have to — I believe many people are using yarn they’ve got lying around in their stashes of varying weights with varying hook sizes. The amount of yarn you will need depends on what yarn weight you choose, your hook size, and how big you want your blanket to be. I’m making a throw blanket and so only got the 10 skeins of the Stylecraft Special DK (plus one extra for the border we’ll add at the end, so 11 total). I hope this has answered your questions — if you have any more, I’m glad to help! And again, I’m glad to have you aboard! If you can upload pictures, I’d love to see your progress on this blog’s facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/NotYourAverageCrochet Enjoy! 🙂

    • Thanks, I’m glad you like it! All of the “special” stitches in the blanket (the Catharine wheel, the star stitch, the granny stripe, etc.) are fully explained in the CAL posts with pictures to help guide you through, but I did not explain the basic stitches. If you have never crocheted before and need help with those, this link has instructions on how to do the basics as well as information about yarn labels and the tools you’ll need: http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/getting_started.php3
I hope that helps and I can’t wait to see how you get on! If you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask! 🙂

What size and what kind of crocheting needles should I get?

        Thank you 🙂

        Like

        • Well it depends on the yarn you get, actually. There should be a recommendation on the yarn label for hook/needle size in metric measurements, so I’d follow that unless you specifically want to use something different. For instance, I’m using DK weight yarn with a 5.00mm hook; my hook is a bit bigger than is usually recommended for that yarn weight, but I find it makes the produced fabric less stiff than if I would have used a smaller hook. I prefer using metal or wooden hooks over plastic because plastic hooks bend a bit and can therefore make slightly larger stitches. As far as the hook’s brand, I prefer Susan Bates over Boye. If you want something fancy, I like Brittany Birch hooks (www.deramores.com) and I think the Harmony hooks from http://www.knitpicks.com would be a good choice, also. I hope that helps! 🙂

    • Hmmm I’m not sure what is wrong. There are supposed to be pictures but they’re showing up for me. I don’t know what to recommend that would make them show up again… Maybe try a different computer? A setting somewhere could be off…

  25. I am having trouble understanding the “multiple of 24”. For the life of me, I can’t figure out how 96, 120 or 144 is a multiple of 24.

    “Begin by chaining any multiple of 24 (i.e. 96, 120, 144, etc.,”….?

Can I get some help understanding how this works? THX!

    Like

    • It’s because 24 x 4 = 96, and 24 x 5 = 120, and 24 x 6 = 144. So you need to chain 24 multiplied as many times as you need to make the blanket the size you want. Does that make sense?

      Like

      • Thank you Hannah. You were very kind and patient with me. Thanks for not pointing out how simple this is. Of course it makes perfect sense when you know how to multiply, add or subtract. I’ll work on that! 🙂

        Like

        • You are perfectly fine! The whole chain thing is really confusing especially with written instructions, as opposed to a real live demonstration. I can’t tell you how many times I got confused writing it! 🙂

    • OH MY Gosh! I am so embarrassed! I can’t explain it, but I just could not get the numbers straight in my head, until a couple hrs ago…..I was like, “24 x 4 = 96”. Totally brain toot.
      Never mind :-/
