progress on my fingerless gloves

So instead of using this fancy pattern, I started this simpler one.  The first was too difficult for me at this time.  Here’s what I’ve got so far:

I’m about to start the ribbing at the top — these are going really quickly, which is great!  I’ve made a mistake, though.  I’ve never done an actual gusset before, and something went wrong, leaving a hole in the work:

Since I’m not sure how to go back and fix it, I decided that when I connect my yarn to do the thumb, I’ll just use a tail to sew it up.

That’s another thing, though.  Do you know how to pick up stitches like on this thumb hole?  Please help if you know — I’m stumped!

Thanks for stopping by, let me know if you know how to pick up those stitches!

I imagine it is similar to picking up stitches on the heel of a sock, but since I usually get holes in my socks, that is the limit of my wisdom on the subject.

  2. This might help – http://wisehilda.blogspot.de/2010/01/on-picking-up-gusset-stitches-avoiding.html – at least you avoid holes with it … Good luck!

  3. After looking at the pattern I can only think of one thing. One of your M1R or M1L was either missed or mixed up. Simply taking the tail and sewing the hole will work for sure. You can end up with the same kind of hole in your gusset in socks. When I do mine at the point where I have to knit my first round joining my heel flap I pick up a stitch in that gap between my side stitches and heel stitches and knit it together making that little hole close up. If you never done socks this probably makes no sense but a helpful tip if you do. When ever I come across a little hole like this. I just sew it up when finishing. No biggie 🙂 hope this helps 🙂

  4. The easiest way to pick up stitches is to do it LOOSELY with a crochet hook slightly smaller than your knitting needle. Then slide the stitches from the smooth (non-hook) end of the crochet hook onto your knitting needle.
